If you live in LA or have been following me long enough you’ve probably heard the word “keto” referenced a few times. What is this “keto” and why do you care?
Keto is short for Ketogenic diets that are all the rage in LA and health conscious areas alike. The diet was originated in the 1920’s by Dr. Russell Wilder to treat epilepsy in children and has made a major comeback to treat more than just neurological disorders, but also treatments for cancer and weight-loss. Ketogenic diets are high in fat, moderate in protein and low in carbohydrates. This ratio switches the body from a sugar burning body over to burning ketones as an energy source, thus ending the dependency on eating regular meals. Intermittent fasting is reducing the window of time a person eats throughout the day. Fasting forces the body to use it’s own fat stores as energy rather than glucose.
The benefits of the keto diet include increased energy, fat reduction, optimizing mental and fitness performance, reduced inflammation and oxidative stress. I also am a big believer in a “paleo” lifestyle, which paleo and keto are vary similar in that it stresses eating whole foods like meats, veggies, nuts and fruit and spending more time exercising, socializing and outdoor time. You are a product of your lifestyle, so making your daily routine and influence as positive as possible will give you the body and life you’e always dreamed of.
My hacks are to read and educate yourself in anything nutrition and health related. I have read many books on paleo and keto and Mark Sisson’s Keto Reset Diet is what I try to follow to reach my health and fitness goals. You can google and ask friends for advice and get online recipes, but until you understand why and understand in depth how to follow the keto diet, I don’t recommend going at it alone. I started the first 60 day reset after the first of the year, and I have been eating keto 80% of the time since. I don’t recommend eating keto if you’re still eating carbohydrates a lot, and its not easy for the body to switch from glucose to ketone burning, so that is why the reset is 60 days. Your body has been burning carbs for energy for decades its not going to change over night, so until your glucose stores are depleted you can’t be in Ketosis until you’ve been eating less than 50g of carbs a day for at least 3 weeks. Eating massive amounts of fat and still eating sugar will actually make you gain weight, so don’t try this unless you’re actually serious.
Keto is not a diet, its a lifestyle. Yes, you can drop substantial weight fast, but instead of panicking before a big event like a wedding or shoot, why not stop and ask how you got there in the first place? Do you have a healthy relationship with food and your own self image? Do you prioritize looking good over your own health? I am the first person to admit that I am vain as fuck, and I like looking good, and I used to starve myself and battled with anorexia for years, but all that changed when I realized that eating the right foods not only keeps you looking great, but also nourishes your body on a cellular level to be healthy mind, body and soul. I am happy to say that now I am respectful to my body and practice a healthy balance and I am lucky to have the good influence of my husband who initially introduced me to the paleo lifestyle.
I am not saying that paleo/ keto is for everyone. I know lots of vegans and pescatarians that are happy and feel great, but keto is what works for me, and I get lots of questions asked about it since I post a lot about it and share recipes. If you are curious about if its right for you I would suggest getting the Keto Reset diet and giving it a full 60 days and see how you feel. You never know your limits til you test them. xo AMC
